Growing up in Ballymurphy I was often woken up at night by
footsteps on my garage roof. These footsteps were followed by gunfire. The
routine was to roll out of bed onto the bedroom floor, then my parents would
come upstairs to make sure my sister and I were OK.
Terry Enright was unique. He was my hero. He was shot dead when I was 13. I wanted to be like him and believe in young people, the way he believed in me. Very few believed and understood was trying to do.
Challenge for Youth believed in me and encouraged me. The Gap scheme allowed me to grow and learn and develop.
When I won the Terry Enright Endeavour Award it was a message to me that I was on the right path.
My dream is to open an Outdoor Education project in the "Heart of Murphy" with a view of working with the "hardest to reach young people". Encourage them to leave positive footsteps.
